ANGLE Technology Ventures Forms New Software Company, Aberro Inc.
ANGLE Commercialization Process Brings Breakthrough Software Testing Approach to the Market, Eliminating Scripting and Test Authoring
VIENNA, VA — 04 November 2005 — ANGLE Technology Ventures LLC, the U.S. technology commercialization arm of ANGLE plc (LSE: AGL), today announced the formation of a new company, Aberro, Inc (www.aberrosoftware.com). Aberro has developed a breakthrough approach in software testing, solving a number of issues that have plagued the industry for years. Aberro is the first U.S. venture to go through ANGLE's technology commercialization process one that has resulted in the creation of seven successful companies in Europe.
Unlike most venture capital firms, ANGLE works with scientists and inventors to form companies around their intellectual property. ANGLE partners with universities, private and government research labs to find and commercialize 'disruptive' and breakthrough technologies. In addition to the initial capital investment and providing the senior management team, ANGLE handles market and competitive due diligence, the patent filing process, business plan development, product development and testing, the go-to-market strategy and all other aspects involved in technology commercialization.
In forming Aberro, ANGLE assembled a world-class management team headed by CEO Douglas Smith and Vice President of Marketing Steve Lafferty. Smith joins the company from ANGLE, where he served as an Entrepreneur in Residence. He has over 20 years of management experience, including CEO and COO roles at three start-up companies and senior management positions at Digital Equipment, Compaq and EMC. Lafferty previously served as Business Unit Director with Manugistics and has held senior-level marketing roles at Cadre, Iona, Sterling Software and Green Hills Software.
Additionally, Aberro's Co-Founder and CTO William Rogers, Ph.D., brings over 20 years of research and development experience to the team. Rogers, an Austin, Texas-based electrical engineer, is the originator of Aberro's revolutionary software testing technique, Adaptive Automated Testing, which enables rigorous automated testing of software far earlier than any other solution on the market.
"Today's announcement is an important milestone as it validates the ANGLE business model and highlights a success story about our intellectual property commercialization process," said Rob Kornblum, Managing Director of ANGLE Technology Ventures and Chairman of Aberro's Board of Directors. "Our approach allows us to work with disruptive technologies such as Aberro and bring them to market. We already see a tremendous amount of interest in Aberro from the software community."
A recent IDC report projected that in 2006, companies will spend over $1 billion on tools to help improve their software testing capabilities. While more companies are adopting automation, the majority of them rely on manual testing. Rogers recognized that human testing, though labor intensive, is relatively easy to set up and requires only a general knowledge of the application. Script-based (automated) testing is very costly for initial set up and maintenance, but fast to execute. Aberro's Adaptive Automated Testing delivers the best of both worlds: easy and rapid test creation, with no programming skills required, coupled with low-cost execution that automatically adapts to changes in the target application.
With Aberro's technology, tests are automatically created in a matter of minutes. It allows testers to find and repair defects sooner and more easily, while reducing development costs and improving overall software quality.
"Great technology is no longer enough to be successful today. Adaptive Automated Testing may have never materialized had I not synched up with ANGLE," said William Rogers, Co-Founder and CTO of Aberro. "ANGLE offers a very unique approach to venture capital. ANGLE's model of combining professional management expertise and initial capital was very attractive to me as it allowed me to commercialize my intellectual property and take my idea to market. ANGLE played a critical role in forming the company and accelerating the development of the product."
Based on patent-pending technology, the Aberro product is currently in beta trials with several companies and will be available for purchase later this year. Aberro will preview the technology at STARWEST, the world's largest software testing event, which is being held from November 14-18 in Anaheim, California.
