ANGLE Technology Ventures Expands U.S. Management Team and Opens New Philadelphia Office to Support Growth
Leading International IT Commercialization Firm Adds Two Well-known Healthcare Veterans, Dr. David Counts and James Goldberg
VIENNA, VA — 17 October 2005 — ANGLE Technology Ventures LLC, the U.S. technology commercialization arm of ANGLE plc (LSE: AGL) today announced the addition of two industry veterans, David Counts, Ph.D., and James Goldberg, that will bolster the company's U.S. executive team. The company is also opening a new office in Philadelphia, a region that has a burgeoning technology sector and hosts some of the world's most renowned academic institutions.
Dr. Counts joins the team as Associate Director and will be based in ANGLE's new office. James Goldberg comes on as Vice President. These hires reflect the firm's commitment to the healthcare industry. The two will lead ANGLE's efforts to commercialize early-stage technologies in life sciences, medical devices and other healthcare technologies and services. With 50 years of experience combined, Dr. Counts and Goldberg possess the kind of heavy-hitting industry experience that will drive the company into its next phase of growth.
Dr. Counts brings experience in health care and pharmaceutical product development to this position. Most recently, he served as Director of life sciences at the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP). At BFTP/SEP, he played an instrumental role in developing the Innovation Partnership, a consortium of economic development and business assistance organizations that help early stage technology companies in biotechnology, nanotechnology and advanced manufacturing secure federal funding opportunities. As director, Dr. Counts also participated in the formation of the Nanotechnology Institute, a research and commercialization collaboration between multiple universities and corporations.
Prior to Ben Franklin, he was Associate Vice President of medical and biotechnologies at BTG International, a technology licensing company focused on medical science. In this role, he helped evaluate technologies for acquisition and licensing by BTG. Prior to BTG, Dr. Counts was co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of a life sciences start-up. He has also worked at Eli Lily, Marion Merrill Dow and Gillette Research Institute.
At ANGLE, Dr. Counts will work closely with the technology transfer staffs at Philadelphia area universities to help identify commercializable technologies and enable start-up formation. He will drive the partnership between BFTP/SEP and ANGLE Technology, which was formed in February 2005 with the intent to stimulate the development bio and nano technologies that were coming out of universities within the greater Philadelphia region.
James Goldberg brings a wealth of technology commercialization, start-up, strategy and financing experience to ANGLE. Goldberg worked with Stanford Research Institute and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to create new spin-out companies in the medical device area. Early in his career, he founded Theta Resources, a product and technology development group in San Francisco. A serial entrepreneur and holder of over a dozen international patents, Goldberg also founded Smart Analyst, an information business services provider. He also served as principal of Nextera, Inc, an ebusiness consulting company started by Oracle's Larry Ellison.
Goldberg also worked at PA Consulting Group, a leading international management, systems and technology consultancy, where he was a principal in the healthcare group. At PA, he worked with blue-chip companies including Baxter, Abbott, Lily, St. Jude, BMS, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Apple, IBM and Proctor & Gamble.
Goldberg has held management and advisory roles for European and Asian companies. He has lectured in the Republic of China and other areas in the Far East on product and technology innovation.
"The addition of Dave and James fortifies our life sciences expertise. They both bring a solid understanding of how to commercialize university, national lab and corporate intellectual property," said Rob Kornblum, Managing Director of ANGLE Technology Ventures. "We are fortunate to have two individuals of this caliber on board, both of whom have the unique understanding of how to commercialize intellectual property. We're confident their healthcare expertise and proven track record in turning innovation into business will play an important role in our continued expansion."
The new office is located at 1835 Market Street, Suite 1100, Philadelphia, PA, 19103.
