Founded by ANGLE Technology Limited in January 2000, Acolyte Biomedica Ltd is a privately funded UK-based company developing proprietary diagnostic systems for clinical microbiology. Acolyte's technology (BacLite™) allows identification ID and antibiotic sensitivity testing (AST) of bacterial infections in 2-4 hours instead of 2-3 days required currently. This unprecedented acceleration of diagnosis will substantially reduce hospital costs and improve the management of infectious disease patients.

Acolyte's technology derives from an exclusive license in its field to 12 patents held by Dstl Porton Down, a division of the UK Secretary of State for Defence. The market that can be addressed by BacLite™ technology exceeds $1 billion p.a.

Antibiotic susceptibility tests direct from blood cultures, never before possible;
An MRSA test that can give a result in 90 minutes - there are 5 million MRSA tests performed in the UK each year, 15 million in the US;
A product range for which the potential market has been independently estimated to be over $3 billion p.a.

An instrument platform is under development to deliver these applications to hospital laboratories in a cost-effective way. Additionally, the technology platform allows adaptability to applications beyond conventional microbiology, including contamination testing of blood products such as platelets for transfusion.
